Kalymnos on film- Olympus Mju & Kodak Pro 100

Olympus Mju-1

Is there vacation without a film camera?

I must have been eighteen years old, so it was probably 2001, when I traveled to Rhodes with a friend. We brought along my family’s film camera, an Olympus Mju, a model from one of its generations. I remember the silver compact cameras used for taking family photos at celebrations—my grandparents had a similar one as well. Later, digital cameras came along and replaced these classics, until, a couple of decades later, they started regaining popularity.

This time, I returned to Greece, to the island of Kalymnos, with an Mju in hand. I had found this camera among Fotoman’s used collection specifically for this trip. Now the camera waits for its next adventure, displayed in a cabinet alongside another Olympus. This one replaced a Canon compact camera whose motor broke down last spring.

The compact little film camera traveled well in a harness and is simple to use. The fully automated Mju-1 is quick, though I didn’t always nail the focus, especially when trying to take portraits of goats. I still need to practice the composition-focus-shoot process.

Below are some nostalgic photos with a color palette captured on Kodak Pro 100 film.
